Robert Alter, a renowned scholar of Hebrew and the Jewish Bible, will make a presentation this month at Vanderbilt University titled “The Challenge of Translating the Bible.”
Alter will speak at 7 p.m. on Jan. 30 in the reading room at the Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Parking is available in the Wesley Place garage at 21st Avenue and Scarritt Place. This event, which is open to the public, is sponsored by the Vanderbilt Program in Jewish Studies, the Department of English, the Department of Religious Studies, and the Divinity School.
A professor of Hebrew and comparative literature at the University of California-Berkeley, Alter is the author of twenty-two books, including award-winning translations of Genesis and the Five Books of Moses and two prize-winning volumes on biblical narrative and poetry. •
